A number of politicians and educators in Guam have been startled by plans which could allow school officers to be equipped with firearms at local high schools starting next year.
The Department of Education and the Judiciary of Guam have partnered in an effort to deter violence on school campuses by training five school resource officers.
They will be based at high schools, acting as law enforcement officials to keep schools safe, and they may be armed.
The president of the Guam Federation of Teachers, Matt Rector, says the small number of incidents that have occurred in schools does not warrant the move.
"Some people seem to be under the illusion that having somebody with a gun is going to stop kids from fighting and I don't believe that's the case. I believe it's going to create just the opposite effect and endanger our kids even more."
The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Guam has until January the 3rd to decide whether the school officers will be armed.
