Freeport Papua workers to extend strike

7:37 am on 12 December 2011

Workers at Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold's Grasberg mine in Indonesia's Papua region will extend their strike until January.

About 8,000 workers at Grasberg, which holds the world's largest recoverable reserves of copper, have been on strike since September, demanding higher wages.

Bloomberg reports Freeport Indonesia's labor union spokesman, Juli Parorrongan, as saying workers want to encourage further discussion.

A Jakarta- based spokesman for the company, says management is also open to having a dialogue with the workers and will meet fair and reasonable demands.
