Vanuatu buses and taxis off the road in protest at licence hike

7:59 pm on 6 December 2011

Owners and operators of public transport in Vanuatu's capital staged a strike for several hours today in protest at a huge rise in municipal charges for licence renewals.

Over 500 buses and taxis were off the road for six hours protesting at the increase imposed by Port Vila Municipal Council.

For the current year the charge has been 66 US dollars but that is to go up to 177 US dollars.

The drivers want the local government to rethink the move and say they'll protest again if the increase is not cut back.
