Indonesian security personnel seek Papuan rebels after police killed

The Puncak Jaya regency of Indonesia's Papua province is reported to be awash with security personnel who are hunting Papuan separatist rebels.

This comes after two police were killed in a reported attack by National Liberation Army rebels on Sunday.

The national police spokesman Major General Saud Usman Nasution has confirmed that hundreds more troops have been deployed in the separatist stronghold of Puncak Jaya since the attack.

Nick Chesterfield of West Papua Media Alerts says this comes on top of a heavy build-up of military all across Papua over recent weeks.

"In Puncak Jaya we're getting reports of major displacement and also some pretty brutal actions against villagers who aren't actually involved in the struggle so much, including reports that Indonesian police special forces have burnt down churches and buildings in Puncak Jaya region."
