American Samoa govt takes stand against tenants owing rent

7:07 am on 1 December 2011

The American Samoa government is putting its foot down on people who owe it rent.

The Attorney General's Office has started sending notices to tenants at the airport who are behind on their rent.

Assistant attorney general, Sarah Everett, says usually the government puts the tenants on notice and gives them the opportunity to pay back rent.

If this doesn't work then an eviction lawsuit is filed.

Our correspondent says it's unclear how much back rent tenants at the airport owe to the government.

The government has also taken several businesses at the industrial park to court for non payment.

It's thought in most cases some sort of agreement on a payment plan will be reached.
