The Governor of American Samoa, Togiola Tulafono, says the mens football team have becomes heroes after snapping a 30 game winless streak.

The team defeated Tonga in an Oceania qualifying tournament last week for their first win at international level in 31 games.

They also drew with Cook Islands and narrowly lost to eventual winners Samoa.

Togiola Tulafono says the team can be proud of what they've achieved.

"You have become our heroes: congratulations Team American Samoa, it's a job well done. You have every reason to be proud as we are proud of you, sitting here today. This is not the end, it's the beginning of the next step."
