NZ police boost RAMSI forces in case of Solomon Islands unrest

Extra police from New Zealand are in the Solomon Island's capital, Honiara, amid concerns at unrest over the leadership change two weeks ago.

Security was boosted after the election of Gordon Darcy Lilo as Prime Minister triggered rioting in central Honiara, resulting in 22 arrests.

A motion for a vote of no confidence planned for last Friday was withdrawn, with the opposition not having the numbers and concerns of further violence.

A New Zealand government spokesman says 23 additional police were sent to bolster the Regional Assistance Mission's Participating Police Force.

He says the New Zealanders haven't been deployed in the capital and are likely to return soon if the situation there remains calm.
