PNG election hopeful calls for UN to back women candidates

A Papua New Guinea woman who intends to contest the 2012 general election is calling for the United Nations to provide logistical support to women candidates.

Daphne Kapao, who intends to stand in the Tewai-Siassi electorate, says male candidates often have the necessary money and resources for campaigning and without access to either it's very difficult for women to compete.

She says if the UN is serious in its bid to see more women get into Pacific parliaments, it could use the PNG election as an experiment.

"Papua New Guinea women who are [standing as] candidates this election 2012, if United Nations could support them with their logistics they can walk from village to village to village but if they have the logistic support I think we will make a great difference. Men have the logistics support, we don't have the logistic support."
