Chinese woman gets year of house arrest for prostitution conviction in Marshalls

A Marshall Island businesswoman, Mary Chen, was sentenced this week to a year in jail and fined 5,000 US dollars after being found guilty of promoting prostitution.

But she will serve her the one-year sentence under house arrest, following a request from her lawyer for an alternative location because of security problems at the Majuro jail.

The jail has repeatedly been written up in the annual United States Human Rights report on the Marshall Islands as not meeting minimum international standards for incarceration.

Chen, who is a Chinese national, was found guilty of two counts of promoting prostitution after a three-day trial in August.
