Tonga youth congress's free condoms raise ire of church

The co-ordinator of a campaign by the Tonga National Youth Congress to encourage safe sexual behaviour says it's being accused of promoting sex.

Polikalepo Kefu says the congress is distributing free condoms and running training courses for young women whom he says are getting drunk and swapping partners.

But he says he doesn't believe prostitution is involved.

"It is difficult because with the work we've done they are thinking with their own mindset that we are promoting sex but we are trying our best because while we are still in the mode of silence, we are trying to break that silence."

Polikalepo Kefu says the congress is helping young women to set up their own businesses such as handicrafts in order to steer them away from risky behaviour.
