Power users in the Northern Mariana Islands have used 20 million kilowatts less in fiscal year 2011 compared to previous fiscal year.

The Commonwealth Utilities Corporation says the result is mainly due to the declining number of residents in the CNMI.

The Corporation says many residents have relocated from the islands and many businesses have shut down.

The agency's records show it recorded a total of 255 million kilowatts consumed by all customers in fiscal year 2010.

In fiscal year 2011, which ended on September the 30th, the utilities company posted only 234 million kilowatts sold to consumers.

The Corporation says its customer count also declined by 6.56 percent as it lost a total of 1,014 customers during the 12-month period.
