East New Britain women urge PNG government to grant province autonomy

7:41 pm on 21 November 2011

Women in East New Britain in Papua New Guinea have called on the government to grant the province autonomy.

Representatives of the province's women submitted petitions to the Prime Minister Peter O'Neill when he visited East New Britain last week.

The Post Courier reports that women groups which marched through Kokopo to meet Mr O'Neill have also raised concerns about corruption among public officials.

Mr O'Neill assured the women he'd make sure their concerns were raised in parliament.

He says the government will announce a commission of inquiry into allegations of misappropriation and corruption within the public service when parliament meets from tomorrow.
