American Samoa phases out smallest buses

12:56 pm on 18 November 2011

American Samoa will ban small buses with just four wheels from January 2013.

The Commerce Commission, which regulates taxis and buses, wants them phased out, and has already made the decision not to issue certificates of convenience this year for new four-wheel buses.

The ban was declared last year but the Commission extended its application to allow bus owners to comply and to purchase bigger vehicles.

The ban is due to concerns that small buses are unsafe and had been involved in a number of accidents.
