Solomons riot leaves six police injured

The Solomon Islands Police Commissioner Walter Kola has confirmed some damage to vehicles and injuries to officers during a violent protest following the election of Gordon Darcy Lilo as prime minister on Wednesday.

Mr Kola has confirmed that six police officers were injured and eight police vehicles damaged in rioting that saw rocks thrown at public buildings and vehicles.

He says the local officers were trained and responded accordingly, with 19 people arrested.

He says police are continuing to maintain a high degree of vigilance in the capital.
