A spokesperson for police in the Indonesian province of Papua, Chief Commannder Wachyono, has denied claims eight civilians have been shot to death in Paniai Regency.

The claims and counter claims have been made in Indonesian media.

Wachyono says the reports of the deaths last weekend are wrong but he says police were shot at.

The Jakarta Post had earlier quoted the National Commission on Human Rights, Komnas Ham, saying eight civilians were shot dead at a traditional gold mining site.
