The leader of a group in French Polynesia has launched a hunger strike in a bid to stop a public housing project in Papeete.
Albert Buillard of the Association U'i hau no Sainte Amelie says he will not eat until the government of Oscar Temaru has abandoned its plan to build the five-storey complex.
In a statement, the Association says there has been no consultation whatsoever and what is planned now is ill-suited.
It says the project is aimed at parking large families in concrete cages which it says ignores their rights to be treated with dignity.
In 2009, the French Polynesian government bought the site for 2.3 million US dollars
