Fire in Palau power plant leads to rationing

4:28 pm on 10 November 2011

Palau is rationing power supply following a fire that destroyed generators at a key power plant last Saturday.

The government has declared a state of emergency as Palau is relying on two generators which can meet only a fraction of the republic's 12 megawatt demand.

The Palau Public Utilities Corporation is also struggling with water and sewerage utlities as a result of the power shortage.

The President's press secretary, Firman Meriant, says people are experiencing power outages of four or five hours each day.

"We're encouraging the community to conserve power during this difficult time. The president has also relieved the PPUC management and appointed somebody to take the helm of the utility while the investigation's underway as to what caused the fire."
