Samoa opposition party calls on govt to re-open public morgue

7:25 am on 10 November 2011

The Tautua Samoa opposition party in Samoa is calling on the Government to re-open the public morgue on Savaii.

Samoa's Ministry of Health's morgue at Tuasivi hospital on Savaii is closed permanently and people there are relying on the service of a privately owned morgue that is run and operated by a former government MP.

Tautua Samoa says the Government should re-open it because people living on Savaii face expensive costs from the recently refurbished private morgue.

It says low income families on the island cannot meet the costs of the private morgue.

The morgue at the main Tupua Tamasese Meaole hospital in Apia is still open.
