The Tongan opposition leader Akilisi Pohiva says parliament's Public Accounts Committee will meet this week to follow up a report that donated funds from the New Zealand government have gone missing.

The New Zealand High Commission is assessing a report by Tonga's auditor general into missing funds understood to be for a democratic reform project.

Mr Pohiva says the previous government set up a committee aimed at educating people in Tonga about democracy

"It is very important for Tonga government to make sure that the donation or loan from international financial institutions are properly used."
