Sport: PNG's Kumuls grateful for competition

11:31 am on 29 October 2011

With international matches in short supply Papua New Guinea rugby league coach Adrian Lam says he's just happy to see his players get out on the park.

The Kumuls host Fiji in Mount Hagen tomorrow in the first of two test matches.

International rugby league has been quiet in the Pacific this year, with the New Zealand pulling out of a match in Cook Islands at the last minute and Samoa forced to cancel their UK tour due to funding problems.

Adrian Lam says regular matches such as these are crucial to the teams development.

"Pretty sad to see with Samoa but that happens you know and we're aware of that. I know the Papua New Guinea government and the PNG Rugby League and a lot of their major sponsors are funding Fiji to come up here which is great for not only for us but for Fiji, otherwise it wouldn't happen. Without that support we wouldn't be playing these international matches which we so desperately need year in year out to stay competitive and see where we are."
