A court in American Samoa has denied bail for a former primary school teacher charged with the rape of one of his students.

District Court Judge John Ward said Tone Puloa was a flight risk as he had fled the territory before when an arrest warrant had been issued for his arrest.

Tone Puloa's court appearance follows his arrest in Honolulu earlier this month and his extradition last week to American Samoa.

He is facing charges of statutory rape, child abuse in the first degree and endangering the welfare of a child.

He is alleged to have had sexual relations with a 14 year-old student while a teacher at a Elementary School.
