2:32 pm on 13 October 2011

The head of Solomon Islands group representing the interests of Malaitans has accused the government of attempted bribery.

The General Secretary of the Malaita Maasina Forum, William Gua, has told the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation that the government has given him 15-hundred US dollars for him to drop a planned protest march.

During an interview with SIBC News in which he showed the cash he received, Mr Gua said that the money was an example of corruption that he often speaks out against.

He said he took the money on advice from his colleagues as evidence of the government bribing him to drop the protest march.

Mr Gua also says he refused an offer to be the Director of Political Affairs in the government because he does not want to be part of a corrupt administration.
