A United States Coast Guard vessel with more than 100-thousand litres of fresh water has left American Samoa today bound for drought stricken Tokelau.

A Coast Guard lieutenant, Steven Caskey, says the trip to Tokelau will take 27 hours.

Onboard the vessel "Walnut" are the fresh water for Tokelau residents, and seven officials from the New Zealand Foreign Affairs Ministry and the Defense Force.

The New Zealand government delegation as well as the water supply arrived in Pago Pago late yesterday on board a New Zealand military plane.
