Primary schools in Vanuatu anticipate education grant

8:09 pm on 3 October 2011

Government and church primary schools in Vanuatu are still waiting to receive their second payment under a grant made by donor countries to cover free education.

Under the free education policy, the governments of Australia and New Zealand, along with UNESCO, have committed to paying school fees in Vanuatu.

The government brought in the policy because many children are denied an education as their parents can't afford the fees.

Schools are now in the third week of the final term and some report they're already having financial difficulties.

The donor countries have made their contributions but the ministry of finance is yet to transfer the payments into the accounts of the respective schools.
