Samoa commemorates tsunami victims

7:07 am on 3 October 2011

Samoa is today holding a memorial service to mark the second anniversary of the 2009 earthquake and tsunami that struck the nation.

186 people died when the tsunami hit Samoa, American Samoa and Tonga.

Our correspondent in Apia, Autagavaia Tipi Autagavaia, says the service is being held at the government's burial site at Tafaigata, where more than ten victims of the tsunami are buried.

"So basically, it's just the readings from the bibles, the hymns, and most probably the Prime Minister will deliver an address, remembering those who died in the tsunami two years ago. And also, this memorial service will coincide with the long week of prayers and fasting."

Autagavaia Tipi Autagavaia says some villages conducted their own ceremonies last Friday.
