Limited Samoa shipping hikes Yazaki costs

5:15 pm on 28 September 2011

Limited shipping services have led Samoa's biggest private employer, Yazaki Eds, to spend 420,000 US dollars a month on air freight.

Its General Manager, Funefe'ai Oliva Va'ai, has told the Samoa Observer that only one vessel now sails to Australia, via New Zealand, which means a delay to refilling stock holdings in Melbourne, Australia.

The New Zealand stop also means that supplies are affected because of quarantine assessment requirements.

Funefe'ai says if the shipping company is not making any money because there are not enough exports, they have to look at another way to meet the needs of their company.

The vessel has a 16 day turn-around time while for Yazaki it would be ideal if there was a seven-day turn-around.
