American Samoa sports officials called before lawmakers

Officials of the American Samoa National Olympic committee appeared before the Fono yesterday to explain Team American Samoa's abysmal performance at the 2011 Pacific games.

ASNOC President Ken Tupua told the hearing a lack of volunteers and administrators is a major problem in promoting sports development in the territory.

Tupua says there are times when there's a shortage in administrators, so sports officials have to double up their workload to help out.

Senator Velega Savali says the territory won medals in previous Pacific Games but he's saddened that the team didn't bring home a single medal this time around.

"I'm very disappointed as to what happened the last time. Not even a medal, even, something. And that is why I wanted to bring this subject up, and I wanted the Fono to help out, because, I realise that not too many people understand what is going on."
