The Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, Peter O'Neill, has called for help from development banks in the region so women entrepreneurs can develop business opportunities.
In a speech to the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Mr O'Neill said his government is conscious of the need to have more women actively participating in the country's state and economic affair.
He gave a progress report on the bill providing 22 seats for women in PNG's parliament and said the government would be encouraging women to take advantage of other opportunities.
"We also appreciate the push by multilateral partners like Asian Development Bank and World Bank on gender equality. But in the same breath, we urge them to support our financial institutions by specifically allocating funds without risk to be lent to women entrepreneurs to develop business opportunities."
