Fiji's interim government has announced the regime leader Commodore Frank Bainimarama will attend high level United Nations meetings in New York this week.

The 66th session of the United Nations General Assembly opened yesterday and includes summits on land degradation and non communicable diseases.

The Ministry says Fiji's Health Minister Dr Neil Sharma is also attending.

In a statement Dr Sharma said the health meeting will give world leaders a platform to disseminate lessons learnt and highlight national approaches in addressing non communicable diseases.

The United States has, since the coup, at times refused to issue visas to a number of senior Fiji officials and interim government ministers, preventing them from attending UN meetings.
