11:00 am on 8 September 2011

Powerlifting becomes the 28th and final sport to begin competition at the Pacific Games in New Caledonia today.

One competitor with a point to prove is Nauru's Raboe Roland, who is desperate to upgrade the silver medal he won in Apia four years ago.

Since then he's moved up a couple of weight class and will compete in the 93 kilogram division.

Raboe Roland says he's trained hard for the past six months and feels he can can lift close to his best.

"My squat is - because today we compete in raw, no suit. I think 214kg when I squat. Before because I'm suit, my best in Samoa 225 kilo for the squat."

Nauru took home seven medals in Apia, including four golds, but Raboe Roland thinks this year's team could win up to eight.
