A son of Sir Michael Somare says the move by speaker, Jeffrey Nape, to disqualify the former Papua New Guinea prime minister from parliament is deplorable and the family will seek to overturn it.
Sir Michael rushed back to Port Moresby, after nearly five months under medical care in Singapore, for an early recall of parliament on Tuesday.
But Mr Nape disqualified him from resuming his East Sepik regional seat on the grounds he'd missed three consecutive meetings.
Arthur Somare says Sir Michael had earlier got assurance from the clerk of parliament that his presence on Tuesday would break the cycle of non-attendance and he would remain the member for East Sepik.
"This matter will be challenged in court. We will pursue it. We will take this matter up before the Ombudsman Commission and we look at taking it to such an extent that if, at a later stage, prosecution for the Speaker will happen, that's what we are going to be pursuing."
