American Samoa College fights to receive government subsidies

1:21 pm on 5 September 2011

The American Samoa Community College is pleading with lawmakers to help them encourage the government to pay up its mandated subsidies.

The Chairman of the Board of Higher Education says the Government owes the college six million US dollars in unpaid subsidies over the past several years.

Uta Dr Laloulu Tagoilelagi says the college needs the Government's subsidies to help cover increases in enrolment, the launch of a four year degree programme and upgrades in the curriculum and facilities.

The Government is required to pay a subsidy based on enrolments but college officials have testified at budget hearings that the government has not followed the law.

Dr Tagoilelagi says he has urged lawmakers to help the college.
