New Malaita school on track after talks with Solomons PM

The East Kwaio community on the Solomon Islands' largest island, Malaita, is confident the government will build a new school after local landowners made land available for the project.

The community was responding to a challenge from the prime minister, Danny Philip, for Malaitans to assist their own province in the same way they've helped other regions.

Plans for a school in the region were first mooted seven years ago, but a lack of money mean it's never been built.

Now a spokesperson for the East Kwaio constituency, its former MP, Alfred Sasako, says the prime minister has told him the project needs to be seriously considered.

"There is no other way but to build new schools in order to realise the present government's policy in providing easy access to education, and I think that's what the prime minister has in mind when he said the whole offer must be looked at very seriously."
