CNMI's Senate awaits House action on casino special election

11:14 am on 31 August 2011

The Senate President in the Northern Mariana Islands says senators will give the House of Representatives time to act on a newly passed casino bill.

The legislation calls for a special election asking whether voters want casino gambling on the Saipan.

Paul Manglona says the opportunity comes before senators will challenge another recently passed casino bill by the Saipan and Northern Islands Legislative Delegation.

Mr Mangola says that bill is unconstitutional.

He also warns that a casino operation is not a silver bullet that will solve all the CNMI's financial problems.

He says in passing the bill, the public should not be fooled into thinking that it's going to save the Retirement Fund, medical referral and 16-hour cut in government workers.
