A 31-year-old Cook Islander has admitted raping a woman on the southern group island of Mangaia between September 1 and 30 in 2009.

The man had changed his plea to guilty when he appeared before Justice of the Peace Bernice Manarangi in the Cook Islands High Court in Rarotonga.

He had previously maintained his innocence but that was before crown prosecutor Catherine Evans revealed that DNA evidence obtained in the case had been returned after analysis in Australia.

The man will be sentenced next week by Chief Justice Tom Weston.
