Solomon Islands police raise concerns over gun smuggling

4:54 am on 29 August 2011

The Solomon Islands Police are concerned about gun smuggling into and out of the country.

The assistant Police Commissioner, Edward Sikua, says talks will be held with their Papua New Guinea and Bougainville counterparts on the subject.

He says police are aware arms are moving into and out of the country and want it curbed.

In the past, guns were brought into the country through the autonomous Papua New Guinea province of Bougainville.

Solomon Islands has had a no guns policy in place since the Australian led intervention force RAMSI entered the country in 2003, following the end of the ethnic tensions on Guadalcanal.
