Samoa eyes China as kava export market

3:19 pm on 24 August 2011

Samoan companies are developing new kava export markets in China.

Samoa's kava exports suffered a major set back ten years ago when Europe banned pharmaceutical products containing kava extracts, amid concerns it was causing ill-health.

A businessman from Samoa and the Co-chairman for the International Kava Executive Council says about 90 percent of the exports once depended on Europe and the United States.

But Eddie Wilson says new markets are being developed.

"We have two potential agents in China. We are at the developmental stage ourselves. And basically like anything else it takes time to develop the market and promote it and get customer acceptance of the product."

Eddie Wilson says the company Pure Pasifika Samoa Limited is also working on exporting kava to China.
