Vanuatu Council of Women head returns after court battle

The former chief executive of the Vanuatu National Council of Women, Jenny Ligo, has won a court case against a staffer, Maryanne Bani, and will return to head the women's organisation.

Earlier this year the Vanuatu government removed Miss Bani, who'd been managing the council, alleging she'd used a fake court order to appoint an interim management team.

Miss Bani successfully challenged this in the court, giving her the right to run the council, but that decision has now been overturned in the Supreme Court.

Mrs Ligo, who'd headed the council from 2002 to 2008, is negotiating with the council's phone and power suppliers to allow her to pay outstanding bills in installments.

She has also appealed to foreign donors and the government to provide funds to allow the restoration of council services.
