The first woman has been appointed to head Samoa's Central Bank.

The Samoa government has endorsed the appointment of Atelina Emma Enari as the new Governor of the Central Bank of Samoa.

She replaces Leasi Papalii Tommy Scanlan, who stepped down recently.

Our correspondent in Apia, Autagavaia Tipi Autagavaia, says Atelina Emma Enari has worked at the bank since 1991 and held a senior financial management position before her new appointment.

"This is one of the appointments endorsed by our government to show that the government is maintaining the gender balance to have both men and women heading out different ministries corporations and even the central bank."

Atelina Emma Enari holds a law degree from the South Pacific Law School.
