Methamphetamine scam in NZ linked to cannabis arrest in Tonga

1:18 pm on 18 August 2011

The arrest of three former Tongan international sport representatives embroiled in a methamphetamine scam in New Zealand has been linked to the seizure of 83 pots of cannabis plants last week in Tonga.

Detective Inspector Bruce Good, of the Auckland Police Drug Squad, says people involved in the cannabis drug bust in Nualei on Friday are, in his words, part of the methamphetamine scam.

Detective Inspector Good explains.

"Well that was part of the investigation that we were doing and as an offshoot a number of drugs were found by the Tongan police and they have acted accordingly."

The Tongan Police arrested a Tongan national at his home on Tuesday.

He was charged with possession and cultivation of cannabis.

In New Zealand, three Tongan men were arrested and appeared in Auckland District Court on Wednesday - charged with conspiracy to import methamphetamine into New Zealand.
