Fiji's Hotel Association is welcoming the re-development of a landmark Suva hotel.

In its heyday, the Grand Pacific Hotel, on Suva's seafront, hosted royalty but has been idle for almost 15 years, most recently housing soldiers.

A group incuding the Fiji National Provident Fund, and the National Superannuation Fund of Papua New Guinea are to re-develop the hotel.

The President of the Fiji Hotel and tourism association, Dixon Seeto says the re-devolopment plans appear to have struck a balance between old and new.

"They have kept the old character of the building, the facade, but at the same time, they have also got new wings that have all the modern facilities including the big conference centre. There have been numberous discussions about this, numerous attempts, but I am pretty certain that this time, given what we have been told, and what we see, and they've got some pretty solid investors behind this."

Work on the hotel will begin in November this year, but the completion date will be in the third quarter of 2013.
