Cook Islands Democratic party meets to take stock of position and future

9:25 pm on 9 August 2011

The Cook Islands Democratic party, which had dominated the country's politics for the ten years preceding last year's election, holds a conference tomorrow with the theme of reconciliiation.

The one day conference for party members includes some who left the party to run as independents in the general election.

Party secretary, Eddie Drollet, says the Democrats recognise they were hammered at the election because of their internal problems and the meeting is an attempt to overcome these issues.

"There were a lot of our supporters that went independent and contested against each other. So we are holding this conference to try and rebuild, to build the foundation to ask the truthful questions about what happened and we are trying to reconcile with all our supporters."
