The first exhumation as part of the Solomon Islands Truth and Reconciliation process has begun in central Guadalcanal.

The Solomon Star reports the exhumation is being carried out in Koleasi Village on a victim of the ethnic tensions who was from south Guadalcanal.

Witnesses attending the Koleasi exhumation include representatives of the Solomon Islands Christian Association and the Minister of National Unity, Reconciliation and Peace.

The exhumation team includes overseas experts in forensic anthropology and archeology as well as pathologists and police.

The work is part of the mandate of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission under the TRC Act of 2008 and aims to bring closure and healing to victims' families.
