Fiji union body to seek permit for Fiji employment decree meeting

The Fiji Trades Union Congress is planning a meeting to discuss the interim government's new employment decree.

The Essential National Industries Decree (Employment) 2011 bans strikes and other actions such as assembly without a permit for designated businesses in industries declared vital to Fiji's economic success.

The decree states that the interim Prime Minister has the power to declare which industries fall into that category.

The congress's national secretary Felix Anthony says the decree aims to eradicate all opposition to the interim government.

"Workers are very concerned about this most recent development and I am attempting to convene a Fiji Trades Union Congress council meeting next Saturday, provided we are able to obtain a permit for that meeting, and we want to discuss this matter thoroughly amongst all the affiliates of the Congress."

Felix Anthony says the decree gives a blank cheque to employers to treat workers as they please.
