Arrests close after assault of rugby referee in American Samoa

2:14 pm on 28 July 2011

The Criminal Investigations Division of American Samoa's Department of Public Safety has taken over the investigation of the assault of rugby referee Ponifasio Vasa.

And Acting Commissioner Leseiau Laumoli expects that arrests into the assault, which happened during a game at the Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday, will be made anytime now.

Mr Laumoli says CID has been questioning witnesses and suspects, as well as Mr Vasa, who remains hospitalised.

He says they will seek arrest warrants as soon as they have enough evidence.

The acting commissioner says the DPS is not treating the case lightly and says anyone who was seen harming the referee or others will be prosecuted.
