Provincial premier in Solomons appalled by lawless behaviour

The premier of Isabel Province in Solomon Islands is calling for personal disputes over land to be sorted out within the family, tribe or the courts.

Last week a police operation resulted in 13 people charged after an ongoing dispute over land royalties got out of control at the Baolo logging camp in Isabel Province.

The 13 are facing a variety of charges including riotous behaviour, intimidation, malicious damage, assault and trespass.

Amos Gigini says the dispute between family members is of concern to the community as people can't take the law into their own hands.

"What we are trying to sort it out is to get this tribe as one family to sort it out themselves. The law itself says if there is any dispute over land, the proceedure is to apply to the High Court over an injunction."
