Chinese ambassador warns Vanuatu over Taiwan

6:38 am on 25 July 2011

The Chinese Ambassador to Vanuatu has warned that if Vanuatu's Minister of Foreign Affairs insists on recognising Taiwan, it will damage relations between the two countries.

Cheng Shuping says he hopes that the Vanuatu Government will stop the minister, because the move would breach the One China Policy that Vanuatu has signed with China.

The Minister's letter to "demand" around 30 million US dollars from Beijing to balance the country's budget shortfall is understood to have embarrassed the Vanuatu Government.
