Niue launches mobile phone service

3:25 pm on 20 July 2011

Mobile phones can now be used on Niue.

The introduction of a cellphone service coincides with a push to lift the number of visitors to the island from 6000 to 20,000 over the next five years.

New Zealand's Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully, was the service's first user, making a call to Niue's Premier, Toke Talagi, during last week's launching ceremony.

Mobile reception is only available so far in the main village of Alofi.
