American Samoa bill targets sponsors of overstayers

5:48 pm on 15 July 2011

A bill in American Samoa proposes that immigration sponsors of foreigners who overstay their permits will be subject to fines.

Representatives Tuumolimoli Saena Moliga and Faimealelei Anthony Allen want sponsors to pay 10 US dollars for every day of overstaying.

The bill levies a fine of 100 dollars a day for corporations or business sponsors for foreigners that do not return home at the expiration of their permits.

The bill states that due to the urgent need to curtail violations of immigration laws, it shall become effective immediately once approved by the Fono and signed into law by the governor.
