Samoa declares fire ban in two Savai'i villages

12:30 pm on 12 July 2011

Samoa's Fire and Emergency Authority has issued a fire ban to two villages in Savaii because of extremely dry conditions.

Under the order for the villages of Letui and Neiafu, the lighting of open fires and any operation that may cause an outbreak of fire are prohibited.

The Authority says the ban will remain in force until September.

Several weeks ago a huge forest area, including plantations in Falealupo and Neiafu, were destroyed by fires lit to clear land.
